Who Is A Candidate For Dental Crowns

What Are the Different Types of Dental Crowns?

Our dental life is not always a long, calm river. And it is possible that after an incident, or that due to poor oral hygiene, you need to replace a damaged or unhealthy tooth. If the latter has lost too much material, you will sometimes have no choice but to place a dental crown, which will serve to replace the vacuum and provide a stable and durable structure to your prosthesis.

What's a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a prosthesis that will replace your natural tooth. This solution will be offered to you by your dentist. Some of immediate functional benefits that dental crowns offer include:

  • To protect a damaged tooth (by covering it completely, unlike veneers which cover the anterior part);
  • To replace a damaged, broken or cracked tooth;
  • To support or cover a closed tooth in which very little healthy material remains;
  • To restore a tooth that has been devitalized (after root canal treatment, in particular);
  • To replace a malformed or discolored tooth over time, deformed or blocked by a filling;
  • To cover a dental implant.
  • To strengthen or beautify your smile

The whole point of the dental crown is, therefore, to save your tooth and avoid extracting it, by preserving the pulp (most often thanks to root canal treatment). The root will always be usable and will serve as support for the implantation of your dental crown. The installation of a crown can also be done following an implant if your tooth was too damaged to be preserved and was therefore extracted. In this case, the implant will replace the root and serve as a support for your dental crown.

What Are the Advantages of Dental crowns over other dental restorations?

As part of the family of partial fixed dental prostheses (like a bridge or dental implant), the crown has many unique advantages when compared to other restorations. These can include:

  • Aesthetics: these help standardize your smile and make it more beautiful by unifying the color and shape of your teeth;
  • Functional:  a crown will strengthen a tooth that is too weak or damaged, and therefore regain your full chewing function. Dental crowns are as strong and durable as a natural tooth, and you will usually find almost normal chewing;
  • Stability:  the crowns are generally glued (using cement) to your natural tooth, and this permanently. Unlike removable dentures, they do not need to be removed for maintenance and are therefore much more stable.

What Are the different types of dental crowns?

While crowns share the same functional advantages & benefits, there exist several different types of dental crowns. The main dental crowns include:

Metal Crowns

This is the type of dental crowns most used, especially because of its very affordable price and its solidity. However, the metal crown is much less aesthetic (since it does not replicate the natural color of your tooth) and is therefore generally placed on the teeth at the back of your mouth. The metal used can vary, from gold to silver, for example.

Ceramic Dental Crowns

More recent than the other models, they are composed of a very resistant ceramic structure, itself covered with ceramic perfectly imitating the natural shade of your teeth. It is certainly the best dental crown in terms of quality, but also one of the most expensive.

Ceramic is also a biocompatible material, which means that this type of crown will fit perfectly in your mouth, limiting the risk of rejection.

The Resin Dental Crown

Temporarily used to protect your tooth while waiting for the technician to finish designing your final crown, it is more porous and lets microbes pass, which is why you shouldn’t keep it too long.

The Metal Ceramic Crown

Composed of a metal shell that will be covered with a ceramic coating (the same color as your natural tooth), this is an option that is both aesthetic and durable and in any case, the one offering the best ratio price quality.

Amin Salvi Dental
Is Now Open!

The last few months have been challenging for all of us. We have missed seeing you, chatting with you, sharing stories with you and laughing with you. We are SO excited to finally be able to invite you back to our office!

As you already know, Amin Salvi Dental does not cut corners on safety and technology. We have always prided ourselves in exceeding the recommendations made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for infection control measures. During this closure, we decided to go above and beyond that by adding further safety measures, which have been outlined below. The comfort and safety of our patients, of our team members, and of our own families remain our top priority.

  • All essential paperwork (including a COVID-19 screening form) along with financial agreements are to be done prior to your appointment. We will be texting and emailing the links for the forms to be filled out at home or on your mobile device. If you have a fever, cough, shortness of breath or feel ill, please reschedule your appointment and call your physician.
  • When you arrive for your appointment, please wait in the car and text or call the office. We will inform you when to enter the office so we can maintain social distancing protocols
  • When entering the office, it is mandatory to wear a mask or face covering. Although county guidelines are not as strict, we maintain this requirement for the safety of everyone. Due to a worldwide shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) we cannot provide masks. Should you require one, we will charge you $1 for the mask.
  • Patients must arrive to their appointment alone without family/friends. A single guardian will be allowed for minors, elderly and those with special needs or requirements.
  • We will be taking your temperature when arriving to our office and recording this in your records.

Here are a few additional things we are doing to keep everyone safe and healthy:

  • We have installed air purification systems in the main operatories
  • We have installed sneeze guards at the check-in and check-out areas. We request that when you are required to talk to the front desk administration, you stand behind those.
  • Before appointments, we will use a medical peroxide pre-rinse which has been proven to help kill virus particles

We will have new scheduling guidelines

You will be hearing from us shortly as we are rescheduling routine hygiene and treatment for everyone. As you can imagine, we have a large backlog of cancelled appointments so we appreciate your patience through this process.

If you have any immediate concerns, we request not to call the office but text us at the office number or email us at office.corona@aminsalvidental.com.

Due to the new protocols for physical distancing in the office, we may have limited availability of appointments. Due to this we require a minimum 48 hour notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment to avoid a cancellation fee. This allows other patients, who have been waiting, to be seen. Please be courteous to others.

For many procedures we will also be requiring a reservation fee in advance. This fee will be applied to your deductible or co-pay for the treatment and is not an additional fee of any kind.

We look forward to seeing all of you and catching up on the activities you have been doing to keep busy during this downtime!
